At first she did not want to let me make up the assignment at all and then she relented somewhat and offered to let me turn it in by Wednesday with a 5 point reduction. In all honesty that was fine with me and for the most part generous on her part. But, when I went to class tonight she was having everyone do part of their homework out of the book in class. My book barely shipped out today so I doubted that I would be able to get it in time to do last weeks homework and this weeks also.

So I headed to the admin office.

I ended up dropping this class and picking up the next level of Algebra in its place. Since I am still in the “math” mode I should do well in the class. I’m probably going to send back the books when I get them to save some $$$$$.

The class is Advanced PC Applications with Lab which is a class on advanced uses on Microsoft Excel and Access. I have used both for years now but from my experience there is always a new trick or shortcut to be learned by taking a class.

ince this is a class who’s subject I am pretty familiar with this semester should be pretty easy – if I can make it to class. Also, I do not have my book yet so I am not able to do this week’s homework. I have an email into my Professor so hopefully she will cut me some slack and either give me more time to complete this week’s homework or let me borrow a book.

Either way I will be working with numbers like I was in my last class but Excel will be doing the crunching this time.

A couple more thoughts –

There are many universities which are offering different short courses, certifications and an online degree as well. However people are interested in Microsoft certifications more than any other degree. Microsoft learning provides online training courses which include online exam to achieve microsoft certification . Popular certifications are MCSE, MCAS, MCP etc. every exam has a unique ID like Exam 70-293 is for Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure. One can prepare for these exams by himself as well a training kit is required for this e.g. Self Paced Kit For Exam 70-294 having 425 prepared questions.

I got to class this morning about 10am to take my chapter test and my final. I wish I could tell you that I breezed both and was out of there in record time but that is not the case. I ended up having to take each test multiple times.

With the chapter test I was up late last night studying on my own and was just getting by in doing the homework. When I got to class this morning everything that I studied last night was a vague memory. I ended up taking the chapter test 3 times with the scores around, 60%, 70%, and then finally a little above 80%. The reason why I took it 3 times is that you have to score at least 80% in order to move to the next test. The good thing was that by the third test I had a pretty good handle on how to do the different problems for that chapter.

On the final I did really well on the items that were on the previous test (I better of) but then my memory had faded on how to do several of the other problems so I missed a lot of them. The first time I took the final I got 62%. Again you have to get at least 80% in order to be done.

This time around though I was smart and went back to each of the problems that I got wrong and wrote down the problem and the correct answer. See each time you take the test it has just slight variations of the same problems so if you know how one answer is supposed to look you can figure out how a similar problem should be solved.

This time around whenever I came to one of the types of problems that I had gotten wrong before I was able to see how to come to the correct answer. It really help. I ended up finishing the last test in have the time of the previous test and got a 90% on it. That is the highest score that I got an any of the test for the whole class.

Anyway, I am really happy that I am finally done with that class. I know that it is just the beginning of the Math classes that I have to take but I feel better about taking those classes now.

Now I have a week off and I am going on vacation!

I just finished up my last chapter of homework for my Algebra class. That means that I get to wake up early tomorrow (yes, on a Saturday) and take my last chapter test and my final.

Class is not scheduled to end for another week but the wife and I are leaving on vacation Wednesday night (the night of class) so I have to take my last tests tomorrow. That also meant that I needed to finish all my homework this week instead of having next week to do it.

It does feel good though to be done with it and know that I am just a day away from being completely done with this class. Remember, this is the second semester in a row that I have taken this class so it feels like I have been in it forever.

Next Monday I start my business class so it will be a completely different environment. It will be nice to sit in a class where there is actually something going on and there are other people to interact with.

I will post tomorrow after my tests with the results.

On my way out the door I just wanted to confirm that there was indeed class next week due to my mix ups in the past. The instructor confirmed it but also added that I could come in on this and next Saturday as well. I think that I may do that so I am not trying to squeeze 2 tests into the same class next Wednesday (my chapter test and final).

I really do not like doing work or school stuff on Saturdays but I may need to in this case to be on the safe side.

Anyway, it looks as though I am on track to get a B in the class which is fine by me.

In looking at my schedule personally, professionally, and with school, I have decided that I am only going to complete one class during this part of the semester. Originally I was going to try to squeeze another Algebra into the next 5 weeks but now that I am nearing the end of this first class I think this is all that I am going to do.

With that I will be able to work on some things around the house while still spending time with the wife and kids. This way I do not wear myself out. Part of this decision comes from the fact that their are no breaks except for Christmas during the year. Without any breaks I need to make sure that I pace myself and not push it to hard.

Anyway, that takes a load off of my mind and now I only have 4 more chapter, 2 chapters tests, and 1 final to complete for my current Algebra class. I figure that I can get these done in the next 3 weeks which will give me 2 weeks off before I take my business class.

I think that it is really important to balance your life between all of its areas to make sure that everything is getting the attention that it deserves.

What am I doing blogging you may ask?

Taking a break. In the first hour and a half of this class I have already done all the work that I did in the entire last semster which included 3 chapters of homework and a test that covered those chapters.

Cool huh?

Well kind of. I found out yesterday that this semester started last week so I already lost a day and I am trying to squeeze two classes into this one so I still have a lot to do.

In a minute I plan on starting on the homework to get me to my next test.

Wish me luck!

The main reason was that I only went to class twice.

In my defense I had a pretty legitimate reason for not going – my kids. See my mother and father-in-law usually take care of the kids most of the time but they went out the country and so I had to help my wife with the kids. This got me totally exhausted.

On top of that I had 3 major projects that all needed to be completed during that same time frame so I had no time/energy left for school.

The good news is that the grade will not affect my GPA as it is not an accredited class. The other good news is that I am taking it again this coming semester and I will try to finish it early so I can take another class during the same period. If I can do this I will not have wasted any money or time.

We will see how it goes.

I am planning on going tonight though as I have that option.

Personally I have so many things going on other the next 3 weeks that it isn’t even funny. For some reason though I am charged and ready to tackle all of them. That includes the remaining 4 test that I need to take to finish this class.

Wish me luck!
